- Always pack less than what you think you need
- Always get a receipt when getting money out from the ATM
- When staying at hostels make sure to lock up the important stuff (aka- money)
- When flying with Ryanair make sure you get your ticket stamped before going through security
- Don’t borrow people’s nice stuff (and if you do make sure to use extra, extra care)
- Make sure you know the name of the hotel/hostel you are looking for and where exactly it is, so you don’t walk around aimlessly in the city for hours
- Try to go to local and authentic restaurants
- Make sure the hostel has a kitchen and it is in a good location. Reviews really are a good thing.
- Bring a book or lots of movies. When traveling there is a lot of downtime.
- Also bring a journal. After awhile you really do begin to loose what day it is and what you did the day before
- Taking the free walking tours in the cities are actually really helpful.
- Be sociable and not afraid to meet a new person
- Travel with someone who likes doing the same activities as you
- Don’t make too many plans, just sit down and enjoy
- Make sure to get enough sleep
- Bring an universal outlet plug
- In the hostels, common rooms are the best places to meet people
- If the reception suggests to do something, do it, because they usually know what they are talking about!
- If traveling on a budget, make sure to eat A LOT when food is cheap.
- Ginger candy is very nice for the airplane rides
- Talking to other travelers of where to go is a great way to figure out what you really should do
- Bakeries can be cheaper than your grocery store (Bread is usually the cheapest)
- Try to find hostels/ hotels with free breakfasts
- Sometimes the tours are worth the money spent, other times not so much
- If you have one, bring a smart phone instead of a computer. (It is a lot less space and easy to carry)
- Antibiotics are easy and cheap to get in Greece if you feel ill
- Don’t be picky when it comes to food, sleeping arrangements, pretty much anything you encounter when traveling
- Call your bank to let them know you will be traveling out of the country
- When you meet someone get their email or Facebook so you have their contact information down the road
- Bring a mini bottle of detergent so you can do laundry in the sink and if you don’t at least bring a bottle of Febreeze- it can do wonders!
- For ladies- know that for most of the trip your legs and armpits will be harry…
- Set low expectations…
- If you are away for Holidays, invite others to join you to celebrate it anyways. It makes it a lot more enjoyable.
- If traveling with more than two other people, make sure to separate and talk with other people
- The internet is very slow over seas… learn some patience
- Weather.com is never accurate
- You will start to smell. Beware.
- Pictures are a necessity, even if you look rough
